OLPC To Ditch AMD for ARM-Based Processor

Being the main sponsor for the OLPC project, AMD and their processors won’t be taking part in the project anymore for the upcoming XO-2 touch screen netbook. Well, the ARM chips will be responsible for powering up the netbook.

The main reason for the move is:

1. AMD Processor uses at least 5-watts

2. ARM Chips uses under 1-watt

Obviously, this will certainly determine the battery lifespan and it’s performance. Then again, Windows doesn’t really work without an x86 processor, which means that the OS will be some sort of Linux variant (which is not a bad thing). Well, the launch for the netbook is still far away (late 2010), talking specs is a great start.
